Look who popped in…

Chris & Holly

Chris Player, journalist, and Holly Morgan, content and communications officer, ARN

1. How did you get into journalism?

Holly: I worked at IDG as a telemarketer while I was at uni, they knew I was studying media and asked if I wanted to come on board in an editorial capacity.

Chris: Started as an intern at Uni at ARN and stuck around long enough that they decided to pay me.

2. What’s the best thing about working in journalism?

Holly: Going to Florida next week, free gadgets to play with, perks, events. I like asking people questions and the spotlight isn’t on you but you have a sense of influence.

Chris: Flying around the world, talking to people and writing stories about people. Because I would do it for free because I don’t consider it work. I have to remind myself often that most people work for a living, I don’t believe I do.

3. What has been your best story or one you’ve been most proud of?

Holly: I really don’t know, maybe I’m yet to write it.

Chris: The one I’m most proud of is a story on Microsoft that I wrote at Ignite on the Gold Coast titled – Microsoft changes its tune. It was a chance for me not just to report about the news, but talk about how a business was able to change people’s perception both inwardly and outwardly.

4. What does the future look like for journalists given all the changes?

Holly: Very bleak, it’s going to be a lot harder. At the moment you can’t be journalists if you just write, you need to learn a whole range of skills such as how to do digital photography, film and use a host of programs like Adobe.

Chris: Bleak. The industry is unrecognisable from what it was 10 years ago and it will be equally unrecognisable 10 years from now.

5. Have you ever made a stuff-up on the job and what was it? Any other funny stories?

Holly: Not yet. Maybe next week in Florida!

Chris: Yeah! I’ve made heaps! Once I called up a very well-known networking vendor after a tip that a senior member of the team was leaving and inadvertently told the Managing Director before the person had told him.

6. Name three people you would like to have round for drinks

Holly: Hunter S Thomson, Jack Kerouac and Jimmy Hendrix

Chris: Hunter S Thompson, Thomas Payne and The Reverend Al Green

7. Where would we find you in your spare time?

Holly: Walking in the park with my dogs, a miniature dachshund and a border collie.

Chris: The Internet looking up random crap and gaming or the beach, I grew up on the beach and love it.

8. If you weren’t a journalist you’d be a….

Holly: An author or novelist.

Chris: A reclusive billionaire who lives in a volcano. But seriously I would probably still be doing coffee stuff or maybe comms.
